Powell Mountain Overlook
To the north of here, you can see the beautiful Valley of Wallen’s Creek, which forms in a basin at the juncture of Wallens Ridge, which lies ahead of you, and of Powell Mountain, which is where you are. The northern end of Kane Gap is at its head, and the Boone Wilderness Trail winds down off the mountain along its flanks. It was there, near the head of Wallen’s Creek, that in 1782 Archibald and Fannie Scott built their home at Scott’s Station. In 1785, Chief Benge of the Chickamauga Cherokee attacked the Scotts, killing Archibald and all the children, and carried Fannie into captivity. She made her escape from the war party before they had reached the Ohio. The Holston Militia rebuilt Scott’s Station, possibly as a blockhouse, and it was to this garrison that Moses Cockeral raced for his life in 1793. If you wish to take a side trip to the site of Scott’s Station and to the head of Wallen’s Creek, route #612 can be taken to the right at the foot of this mountain as you proceed west. That road is the route of the original Boone Wilderness Trail. Robert Duff married Fannie Scott’s niece, and they settled at Scott’s Station in a log cabin they called “Duffield”. This was the source of the community’s present name at Little Flat Lick.
